A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

thylac-, thylaco-; thylacos,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. thylaco; also thylax,-acis (s.m.III), abl.sg. thylace in Gk. comp.: sack-, pouch-; -pouch [> Gk. thylax,-akos (s.m.III) = thylakos (s.m.II), a sack, esp. to carry a meal; a sack in which the eggs of the tunny are enveloped; a slang word for the loose trousers of Persians and other Orientals; cf. thylakophoros,-on (Gk. adj.), “carrying a bag (name for prospectors)” (Liddell & Scott)];

NOTE: often used of generic name compounds of marsupial or marsupiate (i.e. (brood-)pouch-bearing) animals:

Thylacinus,-i (s.m.II), abl.sg. Thylacino, the Tasmanian Wolf; genus of marsupial mammals (family Dasyuridae); NOTE, the apparent adjective formation, cf. Erinaceus,-i (s.m.II), the hedgehog.

NOTE: synonym = thylacynus,-i (s.m.III) (WIII) > Gk. kyOn, gen. sg. kynos (s.m.&f.III); cyon, gen.sg. cynos, ‘a dog or a bitch;’ = a ‘marsupial dog.’

Thylacoleo,-onis (s.m.III) abl.sg. Thylacoleone: a genus of Pleistocene Australian marsupial mammals > Gk. thylakos, ‘sack, pouch’ + leo,-onis, lion [NOTE: the mix of L. and Gk. languages].

Thylacomys, gen.sg. Thylacomyos (s.m.III), abl.sg. Thylacomye: a genus of Australian marsupial mammals (family Peramelidae) > Gk. thylakos, ‘sack, pouch’ + Gk. mys, gen.sg. myos (s.m.III), mouse.

NOTE: a synonym of thylacos,-i (s.m.II) is thylas,-ados (s.f.III), abl.sg. thylade (note gender = f.]; see pouch.

[hornwort] Notothylas,-adis (s.f.III), abl.sg. Notothyade: > Gk. nôto, dorsal, in reference to the position of the sporophyte on the dorsal surface of the thallus + -thylakos, a sack, in reference to the pouch-like or sack-like shape of the reduced and protective involucres typical of the genus.

NOTE: the gender is feminine: N. anaportata, N. dissecta, N. indica, etc.

NOTE: family: Notothyladaceae; order Notothyladales (not Notothylales).

Corydalis heterothylax C.Y.Wu ex Z.Y.Su & Lidén, sp. nov. "The epithet is based on Greek heteros (different) and thylax (baggy trousers), and refers to the conspicuous pouch of the lower petal: “petalum inferum basi conspicue marsupiatum,” the lower petal at the base conspicuously marsupiate.”

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
