A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
tingens,-entis (part.B): dyeing, coloring, tingeing, staining [> L. tingo, tinxi, tinctum, 3. to dye, color, tinge]; cf. staining;

tingi: present passive infinitive of tingo: to be dyed, colored, stained.

tingit: third-person singular present active indicative: [he/she] it colors, tinges, stains.

- cortex colore rubro tingit et ad perficienda coria idoneus (DesFon), the bark stains with a red color and is suitable for finishing [i.e. tanning] skins.

tingitur: third-person singular present passive indicative: [he/she] it is colored, is tinged, is stained;

- thallo in KOH persistenter violaceo-coeruleo tingenti differt, it differs by the thallus in KOH persistently coloring violet-blue.

- spiculae praecipue viridulae sed modo purpureo tingentes, spicules principally somewhat green but only tingeing with purple.

- substantia tenera, humida: digito ubicunque tacta colore pulchre sanguineo tingit, the substance is delicate, moist: wherever touched with a finger stains with a beautifully blood red color.

tingendus,-a,-um (adj.A; gerundive): dying, tinging; ad tingendus, ‘for dying;’

-[Agaricum esculentum; fungus] rusticae mulieres non solum hoc Agaricum coquunt ad esum, sed etiam ad Pannos lineos colore sordide luteo tingendos (Mich.), farm-women not only cook this Agaricum for food, but also for dying linen garments with a dirty yellow color.

- [Usnea barbata] In Pensylvania utuntur ad tingendum colore aurantiaco, ut significavit Jo. Bartram (Dill.), in Pensylvania they use it for dying with an orange color, as shown by Joseph Bartram.

Septoria viride-tingens, Curt., ‘coloring green.’
