A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Triens,-entis (s.f.III), abl.sg. triente: a third part;

- caule solum in triente supera foliato, with the stem only in the upper third part foliate.

- petala oblonga, triente basali papillis prasinis humilibus seriatis tecta, petals oblong, in the basal third, covered with low, leek-green papillae in rows.

- drupa carnea ovata stylo acuminata ad trientem calyce inclusa, sarcocarpio viscossimo (F. Muell.), drupe fleshy, ovate, acuminate by the style, enclosed by the calyx as far as its third part.

Triens,-entis (s.m.III), the third of a foot in length > adj. trientalis,-e (adj.B): that contains a third of a foot (Lewis & Short).

Trientalis,-is (s.f.I) L., “A Latin name, meaning the third part of a foot, alluding to the height of the plant” (Fernald 1950); note that this generic name is an adjective, assigned a feminine gender.
