A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
variegated, having two or more (a diversity) of colors; “having color disposed in various irregular spaces” (Lindley); (in fungi) “marked with a variety of colors, which are intermingled” (S&D): variegatus,-a,-um (part.A); discolor,-oris (adj.B): of another color, not of the same color (as when two faces of a leaf are unlike in color), variegated (Stearn); diversicolor,-oris (adj.B), diversicolorus,-a,-um (adj.A); picturatus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v.: painted, pictured; parti-colored, variegated; versicolor,-oris (adj.B), versicolorus,-a,-um (adj.A): variously colored or changing color; see decolor,-oris (adj.B); see -colored; cf. variatus,-a,-um (part.A); cf. blotched, colubrinus, maculatus, marked, spotted;

NOTE: variegatus,-a,-um (part.A) > L. variego,-avi,-atum, 1. to make of various sorts or colors, to variegate; to be party-colored or variegated (Lewis & Short).

- flores colore vario, plerumque speciosi, petalis saepe macula discolori notatis (B&H), flowers with different colors, usually showy, with the petals often marked with a different-colored spot.

- [fungi] infra annulum pilei margini concolor est, albescens nimirum, sed fibris rubicundis badiisve plus minus variegatus (S&A), below the annulus of the pileus, it is the same color on the margin, whitish, to be sure, but more or less variegated with ruddy or reddish-brown fibers.

- aureovariegatus,-a,-um (adj.A): “(gold-variegated)” (Stearn 1996).

discolor,-oris (adj.B): of another or different color, not of the same color (as when two faces of a leaf are unlike in color), variegated (Stearn), of two different and usually distinct colors; “variegated in color, parti-colored” (Glare).

varianus,-a,-um (adj.A): divers-colored, variegated.

Argyrocome variegatum; Asclepias variegata; Eupatorium variegatum; Hieracium variegatisquamum; Madaria variegata; Senecio variegatus

NOTE: ‘variegated’ “marked with different colors or tints in spots, streaks, or stripes (a variegated tulip)” (WIII).
