A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

vasculosus,-a,-um (adj.A): a small container, case or vessel; a small vessel of unusual [i.e. large] size; cf. vascular.; cf. vasculum,-i (s.n.II).

Splachnum vasculosum: “foliis spathalatis [sic] integris, obtusiusculis; apophysi subglobosa sanguinea” (Hedw.) with the leaves spathulate, entire, rather obtus; with the apophysis subglobose, blood-red.

Splachnum vasculosum umbraculo ampullaceo subgloboso Linn., with the umbraculum [i.e. apophysis] flask-shaped, somewhat globose. NOTE: Splachnum sphaericum Hedw. “the specific epithet refers to the more or less globose apophysis” (C&A).
